HP AND BANYAN SYSTEMS TO PROVIDE
ENTERPRISE NETWORK OPERATING SYSTEM
HP 9000 First RISC System to Support Banyan Vines
SAN FRANCISCO, April 26, 1993-- Hewlett-Packard Company
and Banyan Systems Inc. today announced that the HP 9000
Series 800 will be the first RISC-based computer system to
support Banyan Vines.
In an ongoing relationship, HP and Banyan plan to provide
networking solutions, collaborative sales and distribution,
and technical support.
The first major effort between the companies will be to
port Banyan Vines to the Series 800 business servers. This
will allow customers to integrate UNIX(R) system-based
PA-RISC(2) servers into their Banyan Vines network operating-
system environment, and will allow more users to access
resources and communicate with greater efficiency.
Customers now can bring the benefits of using commercial
UNIX system-based servers to their network-operating-system
environment. The Series 800 provides desktop-to-data-center
scalability, allowing users to choose between keeping their
servers within workgroups or consolidating servers at the
department level. The Series 800 also provides enterprise-
system and network management, high availability and access
to a full set of commercial UNIX system-based applications -
- all supporting the computing needs of commercial
customers.
Banyan Vines provides a comprehensive network-operating-
system solution whose flexible LAN operations and services
bring desktop interconnectivity to enterprise-level
networks. Banyan Vines is a widely used and supported
network operating system; with availability on the Series
800, Vines can be extended into environments that need the
compute power and reliability of a commercial UNIX system-
based platform.
The addition of Banyan Vines extends the range of
connectivity solutions for HP's high-performance servers.
This solution supports customers in integrating desktop
communication with the enterprise and providing manageable
client-server solutions.
Banyan has been designated an HP Premier Solutions
Partner, and as such, receives HP support and cooperation
for joint marketing of future products.
"This is great news for customers looking for enterprise
servers that can integrate smoothly into their Banyan Vines
network and, in addition, run their desired commercial UNIX
applications," said James D'Arezzo, vice president of
marketing for Banyan Systems Inc. "Vines running on the
HP 9000 system is the strong combination of outstanding PA-
RISC technology and robust enterprise network services that
our customers are demanding today."
Banyan Vines for the HP 9000 Series 800 system is
scheduled for availability by the end of 1993.
HP is the third-largest computer supplier in the United
States, with computer revenue in excess of $12 billion in
its 1992 fiscal year. HP has been delivering PA-RISC-based
computers since 1986 with high reliability, data integrity,
data availability and systems availability. PA-RISC is
being advanced by the Precision Risc Organization, an
association of industry-leading companies that is broadening
the use of PA-RISC technology and delivering its benefits
to more customers worldwide.
Hewlett-Packard Company is an international manufacturer
of measurement and computation products and systems
recognized for excellence in quality and support. The
company's products and services are used in industry,
business, engineering, science, medicine and education in
approximately 110 countries. HP has 93,100 employees and
had revenue of $16.4 billion in its 1992 fiscal year.
